OUGD401 - Politics, Society, Culture and History: Studio Task 3

Using the lists, statements and points of discussion introduced in the studio workshop as a starting point, write 4 short statements that summarise your individual positioning/opinions in relation to the following contexts:

Politics
Society
Culture
History

You should aim to write a clear statement (50-100 words) that explains what you believe and why in response to each of the four words. The statements should be positive rather than negative affirmations. If you don't like something or are against a certain viewpoint, you should aim to communicate the positive response to it as discussed in the session.

Politics

Within politics there are obviously a lot of conflicting views. Without having someone in charge of making legal decisions we would be unable to have any form of social order and it would be chaos. The laws which are put in place are mostly positive, however there are some which have negative consequences, such as the inflation of university fees. This has had an adverse impact on students all over the country. It is however something which can be reconsidered in the future and may not always be in place. Despite this, it does mean that only a select population are allowed to study at university and due to cost, these people will be more than willing to work hard and get what they are paying for.

Society

Society isn't constantly fair and peaceful and this is due to inequality. Depending on status, people are treated very differently. Much of this is down to human nature and the way we are brought up to treat others. Equality could therefore quite easily be promoted and successfully maintained if people were to follow basic principles.

Culture

Culture allows us to have a diverse and interesting population with varying roots. Without culture there would be an absence of varied arts and we would be restricted in so many ways. Due to beliefs and religion there are disputes and war as people make judgements irrationally, this in turn can lead to poverty. If we were to come to solid agreements among all of the countries in the world then we would be able to accept differences and view them positively. By doing this we can admire the variety of music, dances, art, flags and differences.

History

I believe that history has formed our lives in so many ways today. So many things have arisen from past findings and happenings and as a result we are so far advanced with technology and knowledge these days. I also think that we are viewed as a country as being very privelidged as we have a royal family. This is something we should all value highly as it is quite unique to have. From this stems the crown jewels which are also so precious to us all and they are representative of high society which should make us feel proud.
