OUGD505 - Design Practice 2: Studio Brief 2 (Primary Research)

When I was in the taxi this morning I noticed this sticker in the window. I have obviously already designed my flash cards, one of which includes a seat belt design. I found it interesting to see how someone else had interpreted the illustration and it also made me feel happier about my design as I feel as though it is visually stronger and more striking than this one.

OUGD505 - Design Practice 2: Studio Brief 2 (Flash Cards Research)

Although I know that I will be designing road safety flash cards for studio brief 2, I am not sure exactly what I am going to include on each card, as it needs to be relevant to autistic children. I therefore need to make it easy to understand but at the same time not make it patronising, as they can often be extremely clever. I came across this highway code for young users online and think it is ideal to take inspiration from, for my flash cards. All of the information has been split into bite size pieces of information and I think this is what my flash cards need to be like.

I am therefore going to take inspiration from this publication and design illustrations which are just as clear, concise and simple as the ones shown below. I am really looking forward to designing my flash cards now.

OUGD505 - Design Practice 2: Study Task 2 (Swimming Safety Research)

Now that I have decided to complete some further work for swimming safety as well as road safety, I have decided to carry out some further research. I came across the report below, which has some really interesting information about swimming safety for autistic children. The last two pages really caught my attention as I would like to try and reproduce something similar for this brief. Due to the limited time I have left to complete some more work, I don't want to give myself too much to focus on and I don't want it to look rushed at all. I am thinking at the moment that I will redesign the swimming experience pages so that they are a bit more appealing to children, for them to fill in.

OUGD505 - Design Practice 2: Studio Brief 2 (Secondary Research)

When designing my email to send out, I decided to carry out some research into the surrounding schools in Leeds. I want to try and invite everyone possible in the area but it is important that I get the email sent out as soon as possible in order for me to receive responses in time, and in order to give people enough notice as they may live quite far away. I have no idea whether they will be able to make it on the night of the stall, but there is no harm in trying, especially as I will be able to build up even more contacts this way.

Below is all of the research and reading I did before contacting surrounding schools and organisations. Whilst doing this research, I also came across 'Brake' who focus on road safety for children with autism in particular. This has given me the insight that I need and the confirmation that I am making the right decision in using this subject for the second part of my brief.

I am going to donate the money I take at Waterstones to Brake as well as Autism Awareness as I have already spent a lot of money on this project so there is no point in me trying to make any profit for myself.

I have also considered organising a second event to have a cake stall at uni. However, I know from past experience that this is time consuming as it means going through health and safety and asking their permission. I also think that this may be giving myself too much to do in the space that we have to complete all of the work as well as all of the other briefs.
