OUGD504 - Design Production: Design For Print and Web (Specifics)

After our crit, this afternoon we had another briefing with Phil. At this briefing he talked with us about our new studio brief for both print and web. He explained what they expect from us to ensure that we understand at an early stage. We have to state which we want to focus on, whether it be print or web, and then propose the opposite idea.

This was helpful to know as I can now really start to design and think about my ideas for this brief, knowing what is expected from me. Although we were shown examples of past work and it is important that I try and code the website if possible as well, the more work the better.

Then we had a discussion about design boards and I took some notes down:

  • Design boards are similar to watching a film
  • Tell a story to an audience
  • Demonstrate progress and developments

Phil had split the idea of design boards for film up in to different sections:

  • Synopsis - brief outline or general view
  • Intro - displays the credits and sets the scene
  • Plot - the main events of the film
  • Development - process of characters, situations and motive
  • Conclusion - the conclusion in a narrative
  • Credits
  • Reflection

The breakdown for a design board in our case:

  • Synopsis - outline and general view of project and expectations
  • Introduction - ideas
  • Plot - main event of projects
  • Developmental - methods and processes
  • Conclusion - physical object whether it is print or web
  • Credits - us and whoever helped
  • Reflection - what we understood

Design boards should show you not tell you. Imagery is extremely important as visuals can speak for themselves. Lorraine mentioned the idea of TLDR - if something is too long you don't read it.

For next week's web crits we are expected to have:

  • Website on screen which can be interacted with
  • Next to it we need our design boards
  • Show visualised on a screen
  • Print the boards off

For example:

  • Wireframes
  • Grids
  • Font choice
  • Colour
  • Illustrations
  • Final decisions
