OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Evaluation

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Creative Essay Submission

As I have demonstrated on a previous blog post, I looked into different ways in which I could present my final essay for submission. I wanted to try and portray the content of my essay through the way in which it is packaged. I went to Paperchase and bought a recycled box with a green lining and band around it and then used some recycled shavings which I already had at home. Using one of the handles off an All Saints bag, I fed a label through it and attached it to the outer band.

I decided to print my essay out on brown recycled paper. I was able to print my essay out on pieces of paper which are 11cm x 11cm. This leaves room around the edge to be able to view the green on the inside of the box as well as the shavings. By reusing some resources and purchasing only recycled materials to produce this outcome, I have been able to engage in ethical and sustainable practice which links directly with the content of my essay.

One slight downfall with this idea was the fact that the images didn't show up as clearly as they would on white stock. This is why I have also provided a digital version of my essay so that they can be viewed clearly.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Wording of Essay Title

My reasoning behind my change in essay title was to basically make the question a lot clearer to the audience. Previously, I had asked 'How far...' at the start of the essay, whereas now I have asked 'To what extent...' which I think is a lot more appropriate to address the essay to follow.

I didn't want there to be any confusion with this and just wanted to make it clear that it was a simple change of wording to ensure it was as clear as possible.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Overall Evaluation of Final Product

Overall, I am really pleased with the outcome of my two memo pads. I feel as though I have managed to successfully link my essay with my practical work and I am pleased with the quality of the final products. The stock I have used for it has worked really well and I am really pleased with the outcome of the print quality.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Studio Brief 2 (Synthesis With Essay)

The product I have created is closely linked to my essay as it represents Kimberly-Clark and their values to their new employees, helping them to maintain a strong understanding of their ethical values as well as their constant consideration of sustainability. I wanted to create an interactive solution to the brief, taking quotes directly from Kimberly-Clark, to make it as closely linked as possible.

This synthesis demonstrates a positive outcome, portraying positive aspects of their company, rather than focusing on a company such as McDonald's who have a lot more people against their actions where production is concerned.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Studio Brief 2 (Presentation Development)

When I photographed my work I made sure I used RAW files so that I could edit the photographs accordingly when transferred to the computer. I had a first attempt at taking them to start with but wasn't happy so had another go. I then chose a select few of them to demonstrate the product in the best possible light.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Studio Brief 2 (Further Presentation of Product)

Having photographed my two memo pads I decided it would be appropriate to put it into context. I struggled to find a suitable photograph of an office space at high enough resolution so I just decided to use this plain white desk to show what it would look like.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Studio Brief 2 (Photography of Product)

I set up a small space at home to photograph my work using a white backdrop. I wanted to try and capture the product in context so that the photographs are quite self explanatory to the audience. After editing the photographs slightly so that the colour matches up with the product as closely as possible, I now feel extremely happy with the outcome of these photographs and look forward to putting the memo pad into context by placing it on a desk. I am also going to design some presentation boards to explain my concept as concisely as possible, allowing the images to speak for themselves.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Studio Brief 2 (Final Inserts Ready To Print)

Below are all of the final inserts for my tissue box memo pad. I am really happy with the clean and concise layout that I have chosen because it leaves a lot of room for the recipient to fill in their own notes. For my own sake, I have typed the subject matter at the bottom of each concertina so that I can make sure that I have covered all of the information necessary from the website.

OUGD501 - Context of Practice: Studio Brief 2 (Prototypes)

Below are all of my initial prototypes. I printed them out at home so the quality isn't the greatest, but I wasn't really too concerned about the quality at this stage in my development as I simply wanted to see whether or not the design was suitable in printed format.

All of the photographs are self explanatory and my digital development explains all of the design decisions I made. Having this to refer back to is really helpful as I can see where mistakes were made and where they were solved.

When printed, I felt as though the design of the tissue coming out of the top of the box was a little bit too complex and I didn't feel as though it was obvious enough to the audience what it was trying to portray. I therefore think I am going to go with the simple idea and keeping it in a square format instead.

I made prototypes of the concertina notelets inside to check whether it would work. I think it will work so I am quite happy about this.

I also experimented with printing the logo and 'memo pad' on the first leaf of paper coming out of the top of the box. If I was going to take this idea further though, it would mean that this piece of paper could only be utilised on one side which means that it isn't going to be as ethical or sustainable.

When I printed my work out at college I printing a couple of extra copies in case anything went wrong when I cut them out. Thankfully, this meant that when the ink cracked on my first sample, I had another one which I could use instead.

I scored the inside of the packaging net to ensure that it folded accurately, this worked really well. I was worried initially that it would damage the quality of the print.

I decided to use double sided tape to seal the box because I didn't want to get glue anywhere on my design. I am happy with this decision as it worked out well on my practice run.
